Among the cases of injuries to hip, back, thigh, knee, leg,ankle, or foot, which might all be classified as orthopedic cases in A chievement 35 the lower limbs, are found the largest groups in auto mechanics,wood shop, crafts, typewriting, and academic subjects. Theauto mechanics and wood shop afford the greatest variety ofcurative exercises for such disabilities. Typewriting is valuablefor fingers and wrists. Academic subjects probably show selec-tion for vocational values rather than for curative. The craftsgroup undoubtedly represents the bed cases, men who are under-going a series of operations and need crafts for the purpose ofdiversion, which is a form of curative English, Arithmetic, PenmanshipColonia, New YorkVeterans of Verdun and Cantigny, one with loss of right leg, the otherwith ankylosis of left knee joint Of 458 mental cases we find 156 in light crafts, 34 in automechanics, 43 in wood shop, 41 in typewriting, 35 in agriculture,69 in academic studies. It is impossible in this group to deter-mine accurately whether these activities were selected for curativevalue, but the large groups all occur where one would expectthem to be for curative purpose. Crafts of all sorts have provedexceedingly valuable in many cases. Typewriting and academicsubjects have been found to have a very great value.
