Caption: Fengdu, Hubei, China - Nov 2002. The roof of an old temple on Ghost Mountain, an auspicious ridge overlooking the city of Fengdu and the Yangtze river. Legend has it that Ghost mountain was created to balance the forces of nature that flow down the Three Gorges and to suppress the hunger of the river's spirits thus protecting travellers. Below, Fengdu is being demolished to make way for the new Three Gorges dam. Workers are paid an average US$ 10 cents an hour to demolish their own houses after which they will be required to pay three times their houses original value to purchase them back in the new cities being built on higher ground. million people will lose their homes with the flooding of the Yangtze.
