THE STAMP-COLLECTORS REVIEW. 35 Remakes.—The colour is laid onvery thickly, and is quite raised fromthe surface of the paper in these stamps are employedfor letter postage, or for what theyare used we do not know. Postmarks.— The study of thepostmarks on the earlier stamps hasraised much speculation in our mindsas to their date of issue. We areenabled to engrave two differentmarks, and submit them to our. readers. Respecting the first mark,on examining about a dozen of thelarge 30 and 60 (all we were able toget a sight of) we find this letteringon two-thirds of them, the othersshow the same design, but with thewords Correo and Santosinthe outer circle, the word that shouldcome between these two (as Ge-balla, in the Kb. 1 mark) we havenot been able to make out. Thefigures in centre seem to us to indicatedate, 29 clay of 8 month of 1844 ;but this does not make them veryancient for stamps ; many think thatthe date cannot be meant, and as aproof, adduce only a part of a mark(though a smaller and different one)on an italic 60, which have thefigures 43 in the same position as wefind them on No. 1 mark; as there can be no doubt that the italics arethe issue succeeding the large figures,43 cannot mean the date, as thatwould make them anterior to thelarger figures.
