Caryophyllacese, which comprisesalso carnations, pinks, campions, the corn cockle, &c. In this nat. ord. the genus Stellaria isreadily known (1) by its calyx consisting of fiveseparate sepals; (2) by its white petals beingslit nearly to the base; and (3) by having tenstamens, three stigmas, and a globular capsulewhich splits when ripe into six teeth or Chickweed has prostrate stems, with a lineof hairs passing down one side only, and ovateleaves. This plant is a troublesome but not veryformidable weed, difficult to get rid of, in conse-quence of the innumerable seeds which it bringsto maturity in all weather when the thermo-meter is above 32° F., and also of its beginningto bear when only a few weeks old.
