But among the mantis family there is a remarkable species'- found m India, is called bv the natives bv a name signifving the rose-leaf Insect. It is about tlirce and a-half inches long in the bod\-, and. U-aving the legs out of consideration, may be described as fiddle-shaped, the neck of the fiddle (the fore-body of the mantis) being very long and slender. The species has long been known in cabinets and from good figures in entomological works, but tlic disciiptions from such specimens were verv misleading. In recent \ears we have luid the advantage of descriptions drawn bv naturalists from living examples, and from those who have- seen it in its natural sunoundings. Under such conditions it is quite ii different thing from the museum specimens. The fore-body, just behind the head, has a leaf-like expansion on each side ; and the second and third pairs of legs have similar expansions ^ Gongyhis â "ii ,siiii' iispi<t as in tlw- pn-ciilini?
