Soviet and US astronauts at the Starmus Festival in June 2011, on La Palma in the Canary Islands. From left, those present are: Soviet-Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov (born 1934, Voskhod 2 and Soyuz 19), Soviet cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko (born 1934, Soyuz 7, 24 and 37), US astronaut Neil Armstrong (1930-2012, Gemini 8, commander Apollo 11), and US astronaut James 'Jim' Lovell (born 1928, commander Apollo 13). Armstrong was the first person to walk on the Moon, doing so on 21 July 1969. Leonov performed the first spacewalk, doing so during the Voskhod 2 mission on 18 March 1965.
