Southern Viewwas originally Fort Kilmekmanley, a massive structure ofriver stone with walls three feet thick, which had beenerected in the days of the Indian terror as a protection towomen and children of this section. Byars inherited from his father some two thousandacres of this fertile estate, he desired to erect a handsomeresidence on the site of the ohl fort and employed manyworkmen for the jjurpose. Work was begun on demolish-ing the old l)uilding. The tightly cemented gable ends of the old house presented so formidable a resistance that itrequired two weeks to remove them and Colonel Byars de-termined to let the walls remain and cover them with a modern tin roof and terra-cotta chinuieys.
