A Sexton self-propelled gun near Gold Beach, Normandy

The Sexton, a 25 pdr gun on a modified Canadian Ram tank was intended for indirect fire support. The tank was controlled by forward observers but could engage visible targets directly if required. Its tracked mounting provided mobility and the armour gave some protection from small-armas fire and shell splinters. Maximum range with the 25-pound (11kg) high explosive shell was 13,400 yards (12,200 metres); smoke and armour-piercing ammnunition could also be fired.
