Eaux Chaudes, Pyrenees, 1854. Spa town in the valley of the Gave d'Ossau in the French Pyrenees. 'Passing on, the road ascends a long and steep ascent, and the limestone cliffs begin to rise higher and higher; innumerable streams shoot out at every crevice; and the boxwood, which seems to favour limestone, appears wherever it has a chance. The road now commences a series of ups and downs - sometimes descending almost to the level of the ever-roaring Gave; and at others, clinging to the sides of precipices rising two or three hundred feet above it. The opposite side (the right) is not at all so

The road now commences a series of ups and downs - sometimes descending almost to the level of the ever-roaring Gave; and at others, clinging to the sides of precipices rising two or three hundred feet above it. The opposite side (the right) is not at all so precipitous; and here we begin to see the marble quarries in profusion'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854.
