Plate from 18th century encyclopedia showing illustrations of various surveying instruments and techniques. Diagrams show the use of chains to measure baselines. Also shown is a circumferentor, or surveyor's compass, an instrument used in surveying to measure horizontal angles, now superseded by the theodolite. At the bottom various levels are illustrated including; air level, foot level, Huygens level, gunners level and plumb level.
