White Horse Stables is an impressive Grade 11 listed country house and is a fine example of Arts and Crafts Architecture enjoying stunning far reaching views. The property is situated in the fashionable village of Stetchworth, three miles from Newmarket, the home of British racing. The village is positively stiff with horsey types who look as if they have just dismounted from a mettlesome thoroughbred after a pre-breakfast gallop. Formally the Old White Horse Inn it was commissioned in 1905 by the 3rd Earl of Ellesmere, a racehorse enthusiast of the day and designed by Charles Voysey the celebrated English architect. Charles was a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts movement and one of the pioneers of modern architecture. Before the Second World War, it was a coach house which doubled as a small hotel and it is reputed that HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother stayed here whilst visiting Newmarket races. Until recently it was the much loved home of Frankie and Catherine Dettori, their family and four legged friends. Previous residents also include the legendary Irish Gambler and ex Race Horse Trainer Barney Curley who lived at White Horse Stables until 1997.
