Testing the volatility of gasoline using two electrically heated standard distillation sets in the Pittsburgh, Pa., laboratories. This was part of the Bureau of Mines' war work during World War I, as petroleum products were crucial for the fuel-efficient operation of oil-burning Navy ships and transports. The test aimed to ensure efficient fuel oil production. The photograph was taken in November 1918.
