The old StateHouse, popularly termed IndependenceHall, from whose steps the Declaration ofIndependence was read, and from whosetower the old Liberty Bell proclaimed lib-erty to all men, is on Chestnut street in asplendid state of preservation. Not farfrom it, is Carpenters Hall, and a shortdistance from the latter is the spot on whichstood the house from which the Declarationwas penned; this is Congress Hall, whereGeorge Washington took the oath of office.
