A massive three-arched stone structure, called the Lom-bard bridge, carries the road-beds overthe connecting channel and is sup-ported by a j)romontory from eitiierside, planted with finely grown trees,which quickly hide the passing trainsand other traffic. The Binnen Alster,a (|uarter of a mile across in either di-rection, is banked by tree-lined |)rom-enades, l)eliind which run sexeral ofthe most lashi(>nal)le streets of the 206 NEW BOSTON Here are found many of the best hotelsand shops and such great offices as thoseof the Hamburg-American Line. Thecustomary building height limitationgives these buildings a uniformity thatadds greatly to the architectural eflfectof the basin.
