The view from Bingley Five-Rise Locks, a famous feature on the Leeds-Liverpool canal, looking towards Bingley in West Yorkshire

Bingley Five-Rise Locks is a famous feature on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal in West Yorkshire. It opened on 12th March 1774, and was one of the major engineering feats of the time. Its gradient of 1in5 makes it the steepest set of locks in the UK. The complicated nature of the locks means that a full-time lock keeper is employed.
