Portrait of Gaspare Tagliacozzi (1547-1599), attributed to Tiburzio Passarotti, c. 1575. In this painting, the Italian surgeon is shown with many copies of his book on plastic surgery, De Curtorum Chirurgia Per Institionem (1597). The copy he is holding is open to a page on rhinoplasty, showing his method of using grafted skin to repair a cut-off nose. His wealth and high social status is displayed in his elegant attire. Although reconstructive surgery had been practiced for years, with documented procedures in ancient India, Tagliacozzi popularized the field of plastic surgery, and particularly rhinoplasty, in the 16th century.
