This indispensable auxiliary to our patrol force has been in constantuse during the past two years, patroling the bays and rivers both dayand night, collecting licenses from the fishermen, and making nightruns for violators of the fish laws. The new twenty-horse power Ottoengine has cost practically nothing for repairs, and maintains its recordfor economy in using one third less gasoline than the engine it the last spring cruise she coursed over 1,100 miles. The oldsteel shaft becoming badly worn after five years of constant service, ithas been replaced with a new one of phosphor bronze. By reason of the noiseless exhaust, quite a number of violators whowere attempting night operations were apprehended. The fines collectedhave more than met the expenses of the boat, aside from the salaryof the EEPORT OF STATE BOARD OF FISH COMMISSIONERS. , 13 The boat is in charge of Mr. John H. Davis, our efficient licensecollector for the past eight years. He is assisted by Mr. Hugh constitute the crew, and keep the boat at all times in perfect con-dition. When out of commission, these deputies are detailed to dutywith the land forces. THE SALMON LA^W. There still exists the same desire, in certain portions of the State, totamper with the present very excellent law for the protection and preser-vation of salmon. This sentiment arises, however, from an entire lackof understanding of the subject. Unfortunately, some of our newspaperfriends, with more enthusiasm than knowledge, are largely to blame forits existence, as well as for its continuance.
