The people wereattracted by Mr. Eggleston, and Bacons Commercial 104 IIISTOKY OF MADISON. College was used while a brick chapel was buildingon Washington avenue. Mr. Eggleston was succeededby Rev. James Caldwell in 1858, and in the followingJanuary a church was specially organized to receiveMr. Eggleston as pastor, to be known as The UnionCongregational Church and Society of all reunited. Revs. L. Taylor and LewisE. Matson bring us to the present incumbent, Chas. H. Richards, whose talents and good qualitieshave made him a gain to the community. Arrivingin March, 1867, he has assisted in the later develop-ments of the church, amono- which must be noted theelegant edifice, capable of seating one thousand per-sons. The bell in the tower was given by Mrs. L. , and was at that time the heaviest in thecity; but the Bishops Bell, in Grace Church chimeis five hundred pounds heavier. Gardiner was re-tained by the congregation in 1851 at Lewis Hall,The building since used as a bakery by Mr. Miner, atthe corner of Mifflin and Carroll streets, was nextoccupied, and in 1853, the church moved into theframe building, corner of Wisconsin avenue andJohnson street.
