. A treatise on painting : In four parts ... The whole illustrated by examples from the Italian, Venetian, Flemish, and Dutch schools. Death of General Wolfe, with Fig. 4. The Death of St. Jerome,as Dominichino has adopted the same means to produce his mass ofshadow in the middle of the group, and to bring it in contact with thelight on the principal figure. Fig. 3. As I shall have occasion to refer to the examples of this greatmaster of light and shade in their proper place, it would be unfair to makeany observations on him here, where he appears, as Milton would expressit, shorn of his beams

The Death of St. Jerome,as Dominichino has adopted the same means to produce his mass ofshadow in the middle of the group, and to bring it in contact with thelight on the principal figure. Fig. 3. As I shall have occasion to refer to the examples of this greatmaster of light and shade in their proper place, it would be unfair to makeany observations on him here, where he appears, as Milton would expressit, shorn of his beams. I may, however, remark, that, from his makinguse of mean materials, he often destroys the beauty of that structure whichthe splendour of its light is so well calculated to adorn. Fig. 5. As the merits of this composition have been descanted on byevery critic,—being a subject well suited for a display of the powers ofeloquence,—I shall merely offer one or two practical remarks. Raffaellehas made the principal figure of the lower group (an interesting youngfemale) detach itself from the ground by a strong warm light cutting. ndon. Published by J! Carpenter Bond Street.
