In all other typeof condensers and air-pumps the vacuum in thepump cylinders is neces-sarily greater than that inthe condensing chamber. The valve motion isa prominent feature of thecondenser. To it is duethe complete exemptionfrom noise or concussiveaction. The two pumpsare placed side by side,and so combined as to act reciprocally upon the steam valves ofeach other. One piston acts to give steam to the other, afterwhich it finishes its own stroke and waits for its valve to be actedupon before it can renew its motion. This pause allows all the.
