Warsaw's Old Town Market Place is a main square surrounded with restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops. The buildings are of a mix of Gothic,Renaissance and late-Baroque styles In the centre of the square is a statue of The Mermaid,symbol and patron of the city of Warsaw. 85 % of the old town was destroyed in the war, much of it during the Warsaw Uprising in August 1944. The local authorities relied on 17th century paintings of Italian landscape artist, Bernardo Belloto and pre-war architecture students' drawings to rebuild the Old Town, now on the UNESCO World Heritage Site .
