Harthacnut (1018–1042), sometimes referred to as Canute III, was King of Denmark from 1035 to 1042 and King of England from 1040 to 1042. On 8 June 1042, he attended the wedding of Tovi the Proud, former standard-bearer to Cnut, and Gytha, daughter of the courtier Osgod Clap in Lambeth. Harthacnut presumably consumed large quantities of alcohol. As he was drinking to the health of the bride, he fell to the earth with convulsions and died, the likely cause of death being a stroke, brought about by an excessive intake of alcohol.
