Perhaps thismaybe the holy well of bygone days, that gave the name to a streetadjoining, once noted for old pictures, old clothes, and old books—a place that is fast going to decay. King Henry IV., by his charter dated at Westminster on the7th June, in the 7th year of his reign, granted to Robert Palmer,Parson of the Church of St. Clement without Temple Bar, a certainvoid place adjoining the burial ground of the said church, containingtov/ards the north in length 200 feet of land, and in width 24 feet at. the head towards the west, and 20 feet at the head towards the east,with Hcense to enclose and build upon the same place, and the sameso enclosed and built upon to hold to him and his heirs of the Lordthe King; rendering, therefore, 2s. per annum for all manner ofservices : to hold the same in aid of the sustentation of a certainlamp before the Image of the Holy Trinity, in the church aforesaid,to be burning day and night; and in aid of other things for the useof the said church, according to the judgment of the keeper of thesaid church for the time being. This property cannot now beidentified, and is consequently lost to the parish. It must have beenabout where the railway booking-office now stands, or where thestreet now is.
