Heretained his faculties up to the very last, and hisgoing was like falling into sleep. Dr. Wliitlock was born in Dayton County, Ohio,near the city of Cincinnati, April 27, 1836. He wasthe son of Elias and Mary Whitlock, pioneer set-tlers of that section. He was converted early in life,and united with the Methodist Church, and as hegrew to manhood was licensed as a local preacher, beginning his ministerial work in that capacity at Piqua, O. On January 26, 1860, at Piqua, O., he was united in marriage to Miss Maria Jane Horton, who journeyed with him throughout his ministerial. 120 ILLINOIS ANNUAL CONFERENCE 1925 career and was a lovable wife and devoted mother and a great help to himin his ministry. Mrs. Whitlock departed this life August 25, 1906. Dr. Whitlocks services as a minister in the Illinois Conference beganfifty-six years ago at Lincoln, 111., being received on probation in the con-ference by Bishop Edward Thompson, and appointed to his first charge atNokomis. His long career in the conference continued, after three years at Noko-mis, as follows: 1871, Maroa; 1872, LeRoy Circuit; 1873, LeRoy; 1874-76,Potomac; 1877-78, Ridgefarm; 1879-81, Homer; 1882-84, Macon; 1885-90,Quincy District; 1891-92, Clinton; 1893-96, Danville, Kimber Church; 1897-1902, Mattoon District; 1903-08, Danville District. In 1909, at his own request. Dr. Whitlock was given the retired relationin the conference, and, while holding no regular charge since that date, hewas in constant demand as a sup
