Sun-bleached skeletons of dead marine animals commonly known as Sand Dollars are seen on a sandy beach on Magdalena Island in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. A five-pointed marking that resembles flower petals stands out on the white circular skeletons. Live sand dollars are covered with tiny fuzzy spines of various colors and live on the sandy seafloor in relatively shallow waters. Other names for the sand dollar include sea cookie, sand cake, pansy shell and snapper biscuit.
