This is Estela. Barcelona, Spain: THIS BEAUTIFUL newly released photobook celebrates stunning creatures of the animal kingdom who have each overcome heart-breaking abuse at the hands of those who should have cared for them. ?The Animals? by photographer Estela de Castro reflects the pain behind these beautiful creatures as these images are captured following their rescue from abhorrent situations ? with the secret to winning the trust of these creatures being to talk to them. Ranging from farm animals to exotic birds and big cats, Estela shows the horror of animal mistreatment and abuse, telling the stories of individual animals. One image of a black vulture shows the bird in incredible detail. With missing feathers and a dislocated left elbow, the vulture was unable to be released as he couldn?t extend his wing. ?I always tell the anecdote of the black vulture,? said Estela. ?The veterinarian who treated him at the recovery centre told me that he would have to hold the vulture's head so that it would not attack us, but if his hand came out it would spoil the photo. I said, ?you trust me, I trust the vulture?. The vet released the vulture's head and it remained still at all times despite being a wild animal. ?I first spend a few minutes with the animals so they can get acquainted with me and my camera. I talk to them in a very calm way in order not to upset them and in some cases, like dogs or cats, I pet them first. ?I work in a very simple way, with a black canvas and natural light. I adapt to the spaces in which animals live and to their way of being. I try to be quick and not bother them, I treat them with great care and Another photo shows Claus, a blue macaw, missing the majority of the feathers on his belly. Due to stress, confinement and mistreatment, Claus pulled out many of his feathers, a behaviour often seen in mistreated birds. Claus has since been rescued by Birds Friends and is now on track for a better life. ?I've been working on it for two
