Three years later theyare found sharing the lower storey of White Friar-tower, with thebricklayers, under the hall of the masons. A century and a-half later,during some alterations in the basement story of the tower, the follow-ing names were discovered in raised characters upon the plastering:—Ralph Rogerson, Thomas Forster, Thomas Jackson, Robert Todd, mettors ; Armstrong, Robson, bricklayers—being, it is supposed, the names of the stewards in Piscina in the Chapel ok the Virgin Mary Hospital. Arms of both mayor and sheriff: Gules, three oak trees argent, acorned or ; in chief a crescent sable. The mayor and sheriff were father and son. DMISSIONS to the freedom of the hostmens companythis year were as follows:—4th January—George, son ofMatthew Matfen. 26th May—Alexander Davison,servant and apprentice to Raffe Phecocke, merchantadventurer; William Tempest, servant and apprenticeto Mr. Henry Chapman.
