So that the idea was familiar to Pheidias, though hedid not choose to employ it on his chryselephantine statue. The helmet GREEK BRONZES SS is correct in having three crests, and in showing the middle one supportedon a sphinx. But the side crests have no Pegasi or gryphons connectedwith them. In trying to account for these differences of detail we must not forget.
