Ulcerative colitis. Coloured barium X-ray of the descending colon (brown/cream, top right to lower left) of a patient suffering from ulcerative colitis. The lining of this part of the large intestine has become inflamed and ulcered, giving it a granular appearance. Ulcerative colitis, which commonly also affects the rectum, causes abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea. Its cause is unknown. The symptoms vary in severity from month to month, relapses being treated with anti- inflammatory drugs. In severe cases, a colectomy (removal of the colon) may be required. The bottom of the spine (top to lower left) and part of the pelvis (lower frame) are also seen.
