Reinforced plastic. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic. The plastic (epoxy resin, yellow) is heat resistant up to 400 degrees centigrade. High-strength carbon fibres (grey) are embedded in it, which effectively absorb the stresses occurring in the material. The composite material is used in the aerospace and automotive industries, and in computer circuit boards and electronics. Magnification: x750 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
