Creme brule served at a cafe in Luang Prabang. A former French colony sacked and deserted after the communist revolution in Laos, Luang Prabang is now in the midst of a renaissance, currently one of the hottest tourist destinations in Asia. A small temple village on the banks of the Mekong River and former royal capital of the Land of a Million Elephants, Luang Prabang's renaissance came after being awarded World Heritage status in 1996 for its profusion of traditional and colonial architecture.
