Floodlighting at St Hildas Abbey Whitby North Yorkshire England

Medieval Whitby Abbey The ruins of the abbey church overlook the historic town of Whitby with spectacular views along the coast line. The church was part of a complex of abbey buildings for the Benedictine order. The abbey was founded in 1073 by Reinfrid, a Norman knight, and the church was built and extended throughout the medieval period. The range of windows of different styles and carved stonework still gives some indication of the scale and importance of the church as the burial place of the Northumberland royalty and a place of pilgrimage. The abbey ruins have provided a marker for shipping for hundreds of years following the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII in 1539
