The Menai Suspension Bridge from street level, including an original iron, crossing sun-rays gate designed by Thomas Telford.

The Menai Suspension Bridge spanning the Menai Strait between the mainland of North Wales and the Isle of Anglesey. Seen from street level at the mainland end, near the tower that anchors the suspension cable. In the foreground is one of the distinctive sunburst gates. Two similar gates were used as toll gates until the bridge was opened to toll free traffic. The suspension bridge was designed and built by Thomas Telford as part of his A5 London to Holyhead coach road. It was opened to traffic in January 1826 as a toll bridge.
