Since thehorses which draw the guns have quite enoughwork to do to get these weapons from place toplace, it is obviously desirable that the men whoride three of the six horses constituting a gunteam should be as light as possible. For the gunners, aheight standard, superior to what is re-quired for the infantry, is laid down, ahigher standard of physique being neces-sary in men who have to lift weights, andmust be necessarily called upon to performheavier manual labour than their brethrenof the infantry. A gun is drawn by six horses, the near-side horses being ridden, and the gun itselfconsists of the limber, the caissons, contain-ing the shells, etc., and the gun is only the roughest description, butit will probably serve the non-technicalreader. In conversation with members of the finebody of men who joined the Artillery, I wasimpressed by the way thev had followed theevents of the war, and especially the gallantwork of the Royal Artillery. Certainlythere was much to be learnt from the war which was being waged concurrentlywith their training, there were splendidexamples to be faithfully followed. TheRoyal Horse and the Royal Field
