View of Lake Kournas, the only freshwater lake on the island of Crete. The relatively unspoilt lake is an extremely popular place for lake has a number of beaches and is quite shallow so bathing is safe. As well as swimming there are pedaloes to rent and a number of tavernas. In summer, when the water level drops, it is possible to walk around the lake in about an hour. The lake is a protected site under Natura 2000 and ia an important wetland habitat. The lake is also home to not one but two water nymphs, according to local legend. for locals and tourists alike it is a very popular picnic spot.
