Ferro Concrete Barge at Ellesmere Port Narrow Boat Museum on Shropshire Union Canal

Hundreds of these barges were built during World War II to save steel for manufacture of guns, tanks and ships. Made by building firms rather than shipbuilders precast steel mesh reinforced concrete panels bolted together to form hull. Heavy wooden blocks were bolted to the hull to protect it from damage by dock walls and other vessels.
