Aleksander Borodin (1833-1887), the Russian chemist and musician. Trained a chemist in St Petersburg, Borodin later travelled in Europe and from 1864 held a professorship in the Russian Academy. His work was mainly in organic chemistry, where he devised methods for fluorinating organic compounds in the 1860's, and he worked on reactions of aldehydes. He showed that both polymerization and condensation of aldehydes occurs, and in this way made aldol and, from it, crotonaldehyde. His method for analysing urea was long used by biochemists. He is also well known as a composer, notably of the heroic opera Prince Igor, and of many songs.
