Theliberal principles instilled into his mind by his father, how-ever, soon diverted the thoughts of the young man to poli-tics. He quickly came prominently to the front, as one ofthe leaders of the great revolution that set Venezuela freefrom the tyranny under which she had suffered since displayed so much ability, both as a soldier and an ad-ministrator, that when the dictator, General Paez, wTas forced,. Blanco becameVice-President. He was, at the same time, Secretary of theTreasury, and went to London to negotiate a loan. On hisreturn, he was, for a short time, in charge of the executive,and afterward was elected President of Congress. In 1868another revolution overthrew the existing government. Butthe triumph of the Liberal party was soon followed by astate of complete anarchy and disturbance. General Blancowas invited to take command and restore public seventy days the campaign was at an end, and Blancoentered Caracas in triumph, at the head of eight thousandsoldiers.
