It is be-lieved he caught cold while attending the wed-ding of Colonel Shepards daughter, a week hours after his face and throat wereaffected, he became unconscious, and lay in astupor for days with brief intervals of semi-consciousness. His married daughters and hisbrother, Senator John Sherman, were at oncesummoned to the family residence in New YorkCity. On Thursday, the 12th, the patientseemed to rally, but he was still so weak thatthe physicians hardly gave any hope. The oldwarrior, during his lucid intervals, showed a. soldiers courage, making no murmur over hissufferings. Many distinguished men visitedthe home and some few were admitted to thesick-room, among the latter being Dr. Sherman was born in Ohio on February8, 1820, over 71 years ago. His military careeris well known to all Americans. He succeededGen. Grant as General of the United Statesarmy in 1869, holding the command until hisretirement several years ago, when he was suc-ceeded by the late Gen. Sheridan. The attack of erysipelas which proved fatal wasthe third he had sustained within a few sad event plunges a whole nation in sor-row, for the grand old soldier was belovedeverywhere.
