Storm prediction. Computer simulation of a weather map which forms part of the FASTEX (Fronts & Atlantic Storm Tracks Experiment) weather study. The solid lines show isobars which link areas of equal pressure; the closer the isobars appear on the map, the higher the winds will be in these areas. The FASTEX study uses data from aircraft, ships and satellites to discover what factors turn a normal low-pressure weather system (cyclone) into a storm, and to use these in computer models to improve weather forecasting. The model shown here can produce weather maps which each represent a 6-hour period up to 48 hours ahead.
