Light microscopy of developing skeletal muscle fibres in the fetus. Skeletal muscle forms from multiple precursor cell end-to-end fusions resulting in multiple cell nuclei along the growing muscle fibres. Fibres appear irregularly hollow forming myotubes. With further growth in fibre width the nuclei are displaced to the edge of the fibres typical of the structure of adult skeletal muscle. Faint striations represent formation of the contractile units of presumptive sarcomeres. Magnification x475 when narrow width printed at 10 cm.
