Age hardening in aluminium. Atom probe tomography (APT) image of a 7000-series aluminium alloy, revealing the interaction between two nanoscale particles developing during the early rapid hardening of the alloy. The 2D concentration gradient of zinc is projected onto the background while an isoconcentration surface defines the boundary of the particles. The position of the solute elements are also shown: zinc (blue), magnesium (green), copper (red). The aluminium atoms are not shown. Horizontal field width (short side) is nanometres.
