The screen-bottom forming the lower part of the base ofthe charcoal washing tank used in sugar refineries isformed by a number of frames ; each frame has solidsides grooved at the bottom edge for a jointing material,and the top and bottom of the frame is formed ofperforated plate. The space between the two plates ispacked with sand, fihe gravel or other suitable fine char which would otherwise be carried away,is retained during the washing.—C. C. H.
