A man fishes at the banks of the Dniester River in Tiraspol city. Transnistria or Pridnestrovie (Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic) is a de facto state between Moldova and Ukraine that declared its independence from Moldova in 1990, resulting in a civil war that lasted until 1992. No UN member state recognizes Pridnestrovie, but it maintains its functional autonomy with military and economic support from Russia.
