Antonio Machado was a Spanish poet born in Seville 26 July 1875. He was on the losing Republican side during the Spanish Civil War and in January 1939 he escaped from Barcelona to exile in Collioure in southern France. He died shortly afterwards on 22 February 1939 to be followed by his mother 3 days later. He was one of the leading figures of the Spanish literary movement known as the Generation of '98 and has left a number of important poems. He is also remembered for coining the expression "the two Spains" referring to the political divisions of the Civil War.
