One of the Nails outside the exchange on Corn Street, Bristol.

The photograph shows one of four bronze tables, known as 'The Nails', situated in Corn Street outside the Bristol Exchange. They were used as a base from which merchants could carry out their business. They are of differing ages but all date from the sixteenth or seventeenth centuries. Deals would be concluded by making payment on the nail and it has been suggested that this is the origin of the expression 'cash on the nail'.
