On Hancock Street, facing Bridge Street, is the old QuincyMansion, known to us through Oliver Wendell Holmesspoem, Dorothy Q. The poets mother was a granddaughterof Dorothy Q. Beyond Quincy, the way lies through a beautiful country,and some of the many towns are worth more than mere men-tion. Here was built the largest schooner afloat, theThomas W. Lawson, a seven-masted steel schooner. Hingham is one of the oldest and loveliest towns on theSouth Shore, with its main broad avenue bordered by superbelms. It was the home of Dr. Ezekiel Hersey, the founder ofthe Harvard Medical School. Nantasket Beach is beyond Hingham, and extends towardsthe entrance of Boston Harbor. It is a long broad beach withfine sand, and facing the open ocean. It is a part of our Metropoli-tan Park System, and furnishes an ideal beach for the children,and with the steamboat connection with Boston is a favoriteresort for adults. The bathing here is excellent, although thewater is cold, and if the surf is high may produce a dangerousundertow. The State Bath-House is well kept, and furnishesadequate supplies for bathers. The beach is reached either bysteamer from Rowes Wharf, or by train from the South Station:about an hour by boat
