For onion culture the ground should he prepared the previous atltumn by ploughing or spading deeply, using plenty of well-rotted barn-yard manure. A rather strong, deep^ rich, loamy soil is considered most suitable, although we have seen splendid crops raised upon a stiff clay soil, which was well under-drained. Sow the seed as early in spring as practicable, in shallow drills one foot apart, covering with fine soil, which should be pressed down by the use of a light roller or the back of a spade. When the young plants are strong enough thin out to four inches apart. Keep the surface of the ground, open and free from weeds by hoeing frequently. Extra Early Flat Red.
