"Irlandiae regnum" or Kingdom of Ireland. The map is in Latin and is lying with its northern coast to the west. The map, was created in the late 16th century by Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594), a 16th-century geographer, cosmographer and cartographer from the County of Flanders, renowned for creating the 1569 world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing as straight lines—an innovation that is still employed in nautical charts.
