The new contrivance not only gives a clearwarning whistle ten seconds before the current is put onthe cars, but it also keeps up this warning as long as thecurrent remains on any of them. The whistles used are high-pitched and of disagreeablesound quality. Hence they are more effective than anordinary audible warning because their annoying and per-sistent character forces the repairmen to keep the currenton the car no longer than absolutely necessary. Before theinstallation of this apparatus the current was often on thecontact shoes for an hour or two at a time. Now the cars
